Aan het water

I wanted to portray an everyday, summery scene. In my mind, this person is by the water (specifically ‘het IJ’, where I often go swimming in the summer). While the orange background gives the piece a warm atmosphere, the cooler green character and the look in their eyes are meant to convey a vulnerable, melancholic feeling.

It wasn’t my intention to create a realistic depiction, but rather I aimed to find a balance between my graphic work and painting style. It’s almost ‘illustrative’ in nature. My signature painting style is naturally quite refined, but I challenged myself to let go of that somewhat in this piece.

It’s simplified, with a strong composition without much detailing. Some shapes are exaggerated and the colours are bold. The measures of the painting are 100×120 cm.
